For African American students only

An Ann Arbor, Michigan elementary school put together a nifty field trip. Students would get to meet and ask questions of a real, live rocket scientist! One problem, though: only the African American students got to go on the trip. You see, the rocket scientist was African American. The school administrator wanted the African American kids to see that they, too could become rocket scientists. Fine, but is it really okay to exclude the white students?

  1. So somehow the presence of white students on the trip would so distract the African American students that they would not be able to discern that the scientist was also an African American and would therefore negate any positive message ANY student could receive from the rocket scientist's story? Aren't we supposed to encourage all students to excel?

  2. Boy, Bob, you are stirrin' it up today! Did you have one of my quad-espressos? I would find this story funny, if it weren't for it being true. So, let's go into "logical-conclusion-of-the-presupposition-land" and see if this makes any sense at all. Next, all of the Muslim kids can insist on a tour of the local Mediterranean market. Those descended from Indigenous America can take a trip to the nearest Casino board meeting. All of the poor, oppressed, LGBT elementary kids will need special treatment. They will need a special, weeklong trip to go see tapings of the Ellen show, in Hollywood, at taxpayer expense. So what shall the offspring of the white oppressors do while the other kids are on their special trips? They will be shown films of their parent's oppressing ways and trip out on ADD/ADHD medication. That should just about do it. Is everybody happy, now? NO?!. Duh-Oh!

  3. Cliff,
The Muslims have already topped your idea of a trip to the local Mediterranean market. Friday's Denver Post reports that a thirteen story mosque is being built in a building damaged by debris from the 9-11 destruction in New York City. Are we tolerant, or what?
